Cases may move through the functions of Case Initiation, Locate, Establishment, Enforcement, Financial and Closure during the life of a case. Click on a case function to view the description of activities that may be performed during the life of your case.

Cases assigned to the Intake function are in the process of being routed to the next appropriate step depending on the elements of the case. When the case moves, it could be routed to locate, establishment, financial monitoring, or to enforcement.

In order for CSS to collect child support, CSS must know where the non-custodial parent lives and/or works. Locate is the function of a child support case during the time CSS is attempting to locate, or verify the location of the non-custodial parent.

Establishment is the function of a child support case during the time that paternity (legal fatherhood) is being established, and/or the child support order is being established.

Enforcement is function of a child support case during the time that child support payments are not being paid as ordered. CSS has many enforcement tools to assist in the collection of child support, including income deduction orders, intercepting tax refunds and lottery winnings, suspension of licenses, and numerous other effective methods of enforcement.

Financial is the function of a child support case when payments are being made as ordered, or are no more than 30 days past due. If a payment is more than 30 days past due, the case will change automatically from financial to enforcement function.

When a case is closed, CSS is no longer taking actions on the case. In order to re-open a case with CSS, you must submit a new application.
